Serving Halifax Regional Municipality & surrounding Nova Scotia communities since 2009.

16 Years of Making
Housing Possible

Threshold Housing Society was founded in Halifax in 2008 by a small group of community members who believed the city's most vulnerable residents deserved better than crisis-by-crisis responses. We've been building systems of stability ever since.

Mission, Vision & Values

Mission

To prevent homelessness and create lasting housing stability for individuals and families in Halifax-Dartmouth through direct service, advocacy, and community partnerships — with dignity and without barriers.

Vision

A Halifax Regional Municipality where every person has safe, affordable, stable housing — and where the systems surrounding housing support rather than obstruct that possibility for the people who need it most.

Values

  • Dignity. Every person who reaches out deserves to be treated with full respect.
  • Urgency. Housing crises require fast action, not bureaucratic delays.
  • Equity. Our services must be accessible regardless of background, identity, or circumstance.
  • Evidence. We measure what we do and share what we learn.

Built from the Ground Up

Threshold Housing Society was incorporated in 2008 after three Halifax social workers — frustrated by a growing gap between need and service — raised seed funding from local faith communities and the United Way. In our first year, operating out of a borrowed office on Agricola Street, we helped 42 households.

By 2012, we had secured our first provincial housing contract, hired our first full-time staff, and opened the Gottingen Street transitional housing property with eight units. The rent bank program launched in 2014 with a $175,000 provincial commitment.

Today we have a staff of 18, a budget of $2.3 million, and four transitional housing properties. We served 340 households in 2024 — and we continue to expand our reach into Dartmouth and the communities of HRM that are too often overlooked.

  • 2008: Incorporated in Halifax. First 42 households served.
  • 2012: First provincial contract. Gottingen Street property opens.
  • 2014: Rent Bank program launches.
  • 2019: Three additional transitional housing properties added.
  • 2024: 340 households served. 89% housing stability rate.
