Join 120+ people giving back every week

Nourish BC runs on community. Whether you have a few hours a month or every week to give, there's a role for you. Most shifts are 2–3 hours. No prior experience needed for most positions.

Volunteer Roles

Find the Right Role for You

Four core volunteer roles, each with flexible scheduling and full training provided.

Hamper Packer & Distributor

Most Common Role

You'll work alongside other volunteers to sort incoming food donations, pack weekly hampers to household size, and distribute them to families as they arrive. It's physical, social, and deeply satisfying work. You'll quickly learn what's in a hamper, which items are most prized, and what it looks like when someone's day genuinely brightens because of what you put in a box.

Time commitment: 2–3 hours per shift, 1–2 shifts per week
Skills needed: None — willingness to stand, sort, and lift (up to 20 lbs)
Training provided: Yes — 1-hour orientation shift
Locations: Burnaby, Surrey, or Richmond

Mobile Pantry Driver / Co-Driver

Driver's License Required

Our Thursday Mobile Pantry route is the most logistically complex operation we run — and it depends entirely on reliable, confident drivers. As a driver you'll take our refrigerated truck through 8 stops across the region. As a co-driver or route volunteer, you'll manage the back of the truck, interact with community members at each stop, and help keep the route on schedule.

Time commitment: Full Thursday route (8:00am–6:30pm) or 2–3 stop segments
Skills needed: Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence (driver); no licence needed for co-driver
Training provided: Yes — vehicle orientation and route walk-through
Compensation: Mileage reimbursement for drivers

Community Kitchen Helper

Cooking Experience Helpful

The Community Kitchen runs Wednesday mornings and Saturday mornings at our Burnaby location. Kitchen helpers support the coordinator in preparing ingredients, guiding participants, cleaning up, and maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This role is perfect for anyone who enjoys cooking and people in equal measure.

Time commitment: 3 hours per session (Wed 10:30am–1:30pm or Sat 9:30am–12:30pm)
Skills needed: Basic kitchen comfort; FoodSafe certification is an asset
Training provided: Yes — kitchen orientation with Marcus, our Programs Manager
Location: Burnaby (3760 Kingsway)

Food Rescue Driver

Flexible Schedule

We partner with grocery stores, farms, restaurants, and food distributors across Metro Vancouver to collect surplus food before it goes to waste. Food rescue drivers pick up donations on a scheduled or as-needed basis and bring them to our Burnaby warehouse. It's an independent, flexible role that's perfect for people with a van or pickup and a love of doing good quietly.

Time commitment: 1–4 hours per pickup, typically 1–3 times per week
Skills needed: Valid BC driver's licence, access to a vehicle with cargo space
Training provided: Yes — food safety handling and route briefing
Compensation: Mileage reimbursement provided
Volunteer Stories

In Their Own Words

"I started volunteering on a whim three years ago — a friend dragged me to a hamper packing shift and I haven't stopped since. I come every Tuesday now. It's the most grounding part of my week. You show up, you do something tangible, you see the impact immediately. There's no bureaucracy, no meetings. Just boxes, food, and neighbours. I've met some of my closest friends at that warehouse."

"I drive the Thursday route and it's become the highlight of my week. There are regulars at each stop now who I recognize. An older woman in North Delta always brings me a piece of fruit she saved from the previous week. A dad in Surrey thanks me in three different languages. I didn't expect to feel this connected to strangers — but that's what happens when you show up reliably. People trust you. It changes you."

Frequently Asked Questions

Volunteers 16 and older can participate independently. Youth aged 12–15 can volunteer with a parent or guardian. Some roles (driving, food rescue) require you to be 19+ with a valid driver's licence. We also welcome school groups and youth programs for supervised shifts.
A criminal record check is required for volunteer roles that involve direct ongoing contact with vulnerable populations, including seniors and children. This is a standard BC Volunteer Check that's free for volunteers. We'll guide you through the process — it typically takes 1–2 weeks.
There's no rigid minimum. We ask that new volunteers commit to at least one shift per month for the first three months so you can get comfortable and our coordinator can match you to the right role. After that, many volunteers find a rhythm that works for them — some come weekly, some come once a month. Life happens — just let us know if your availability changes.
Yes. Every volunteer completes a 1-hour orientation that covers our mission, food safety basics, how to interact with program participants, and role-specific tasks. Drivers receive a vehicle orientation. Kitchen helpers receive a kitchen safety briefing. You'll never be thrown in without support.
